SUNY New Paltz Tourism Map
Illustrated map for State University of New York at New Paltz to communicate the area’s offerings to attract prospective students.
CLIENT BACKGROUND
SUNY New Paltz is located in the Hudson Valley in New York, and has a lot of local attractions to offer to its students. Being in Ulster County, the University is in a great location between Boston and New York City. There are a lot of local opportunities for students through numerous galleries, art centers, and museums.
SUNY New Paltz was seeking a map for their prospective student booklet to feature all these attractions to get potential students excited about the area. Along with the booklet, an interactive version of the map was created in-house and featured on their website.
PROJECT GOALS
Create a map customized for SUNY New Palts featuring Ulster County.
Customize illustrations in-line with SUNY New Paltz’s brand and personality to seek the attention of potential students and their parents.
Feature the school’s location — surrounding cities, major landmarks, outdoor activities, and transportation in and outside of Ulster County.
Include local features such as through decorative elements.

Digital Refinement
As we built the map digitally, it’s easier to discover areas that seem to fall flat or need to be adjusted to better reflect specific locations. To help these areas feel less empty, we explored and included activities that didn’t need to be labeled. These became more decorative elements that suggest an activity and include skydiving, hiking, skiing/snowboarding, biking, and apple picking.
